MONASH UNIVERSITY
SUNWAY CAMPUS MALAYSIA
Iston
Four pioneer students of Monash University, Malaysia, established an electronic
communication network using high capacity hardware, a general access UNIX
server and a communication connection, provided by the University.
The server, named "YoYo", is modeled after a similar system used by
students In Monash, Australia. It is developed and maintained by the four
pioneer students - Adrian Lo, Derrick Tan, Wong Kok Leong and Myles
Milston, who later formed the Monash UNIX Group. The purpose, to
provide students with their own avenue for general Internet services from
e-mail and storage space on the server to tutorials on computer related
topics and relay chats.
According to Professor Robin Pollard, Head of School of Business and
Information Technology, there was no formal instruction for the project.
"Enthusiasm combined with knowledge gained in first-year computer science
subjects were enough to get started. This is consistent with our philosophy
of providing education that enables one to learn by oneself," he said.
